I capture a moment! Nara Park

Though I have lived in Nara for more than twenty years, it was first time for me to see a deer standing on its hind legs.

Several times, she tried to catch young leaves of a maple tree and at last she made it.

Walking through the Nara Park, you notice there is a clear open space under the trees. Do you know that this unique visual path is made by the deer? The deer stand on their hind legs to reach up as high as possible to eat the leaves off the trees. This is so called “Deer Line” which is one of the unique characteristics of the Nara Park.

Usually, the branches of a weeping cherry tree are hanging as low as the ground. Look at this weeping cherry tree. The tips of the branches are trimmed neatly by the deer. It is interesting that the line of the tips of the branches is parallel to the ground. Here also you can see the “Deer Line”.

  2. Marc,
Nara Park has the complicated history of the ownership. Now mostly it is the national land.

  3. I've never seen a deer standing on it's hind legs. I'm sure you must be excited and patient during the time!
You got better at taking photographs, and caught rare scene.
I feel sorry Nara deer sometimes get injured from stupid people or hit by a car, and a wounded deer died recentry. Enjoy your time in Nara Park!

  4. Thank you for your comment. This is what I wanted to see for a long, long time. So when I found the deer standing on her hind legs, I was excited. I'm glad that I witnessed a famous deer line being made.

I was also surprised because such thin legs of the deer can support the entire body!

  5. Your pictures are always clever. I don't go to Nara Park very often so I don't know various scenes of Nara Park very much but some of your pictures comfort me. Next time I will find Deer Line.

  10. redrose,
I wish I could! Sometimes the deer act interestingly by chance. Now is the best time to take pictures of the deer as they have beautiful summer fur.

  11. Keiko, this made me smile, because when we were on vacation in the Florida Keys in January, my husband saw one of the little Key Deer do the very same thing. His eyes nearly popped out of his head! He called me to come and look, but by the time I got there, the deer was on all four legs again.

Now I know what he saw!
